Eight Simple Ways for Kids to Feel Happy, Calm and Confident

Feeling good, managing emotions, and staying calm helps kids enjoy life, make friends, and tackle challenges. The good news? There are plenty of simple, fun ways to support their wellbeing every day.

1. Move your body

Physical activity isn’t just healthy for your body - it helps your brain and mood too!

  • Dance to your favourite songs.

  • Go for a walk, scooter ride, or bike ride.

  • Play outside games like tag or football.

Even a few minutes of movement can make you feel happier and more focused.

2. Take calm moments

Everyone needs a little quiet time to breathe and relax.

  • Try deep breathing: inhale slowly for 3 seconds, hold, exhale slowly.

  • Lie down, close your eyes, and notice how your body feels.

  • Listen to calm music or nature sounds.

Mindfulness exercises like this help children feel calmer and better able to handle big emotions.

3. Talk about your feelings

Sharing how you feel can make emotions less confusing.

  • Use “I feel” sentences: “I feel frustrated because….”

  • Draw or write about your feelings in a journal.

  • Talk to a parent, teacher, or friend about your day.

When you practise naming emotions, you start to understand them better and feel more in control.

4. Connect with others

Spending time with friends and family helps you feel supported and happy.

  • Play games or do crafts with siblings or friends.

  • Help someone - small acts of kindness boost both their mood and yours.

  • Share stories or jokes; laughter really helps wellbeing!

5. Be creative and curious

Exploring your imagination is fun and good for your brain.

  • Draw, paint, or make crafts.

  • Build things with blocks or bits of old cardboard, plastic bottles, etc.

  • Make up your own stories or poems — even silly ones!

Creativity helps children express themselves, problem-solve, and feel proud of their achievements.

6. Read for fun

Reading isn’t just learning - it can help you feel calm, curious, and excited.

  • Choose books you like, especially ones with characters you can relate to.

  • Read aloud to a parent, sibling, or friend.

  • Try predicting what happens next in a story; it’s fun and helps memory.

Stories help children relax, imagine, and feel seen.

7. Get plenty of sleep

Sleep is one of the most important things you can do, it's when your brain and body rest, reset, and grow!

Here are some tips for getting the best night's sleep ever:

  • Go to bed and wake up at the same time each day, even on weekends.

  • Have some quiet time before sleep - read a story, turn off screens 30-60 mins before sleep.

  • Take a few slow, deep breaths if your mind feels busy at bedtime.

Even small changes to sleep routines can help children feel calmer, more focused, and ready for the day.

8. Celebrate small wins

Wellbeing grows when you notice what you’re proud of - no matter how small.

  • Did you finish a tricky puzzle? Celebrate it.

  • Did you help a friend or sibling? Notice it.

  • Did you try something new? Reward yourself with a smile or high-five.

Recognising achievements boosts confidence and happiness.

Wellbeing doesn’t have to be complicated - it’s about simple, daily habits that help kids feel calm, happy, and confident. Moving, creating, talking, playing, and taking quiet moments all work together to build strong emotional and mental health.

Kids can start small, pick a few tips that feel fun, and make them part of your their day. Over time, these little habits help them feel resilient, positive, and ready for whatever comes next.
